1.  What do Captain Ahab’s pacing and the mark of his footprints on the  deck represent? Cite details from the story to support your answer.              

b) his continuing obsession with Moby-Dick

2.  Why does captain Ahab decide to offer his men a gold piece for finding the great whale?  Provide details about his possible motivation.

He doesnt matter risking everything just to kill moby dick, and he is proving that his obsession is more powrful than his money.

3.  Starbuck has very particular objections to the pursuit of Moby-Dick.  Find the details that outline his objections, and explain how Ahab persuades Starbuck to help him.

Since maoby dick is a white and one of the biggest whales, everyone wants it. But Starbuck knows that Ahabs obsession is going to far and he want to stop him. Ahab tries to convince Starbuck to help him and persuades him but he didnt accept.

4.  As the men toast the coming fight with the whale and anticipate their victory, Ahab grabs the intersection of the steel weapons and twists and shakes them at Starbuck, Stubbs, and Flask.  What is Ahab trying to accomplish with this action?  Cite a detail from the selecton that supports your answer.

c) He is trying to infuse them with the magnitude of his own passion to kill Moby-Dick. He knows he can eprsuade them and he is trying to convinve them to take revenge on moby dick.

d) He wants the other men to see that he has substantial support for his mission, so they will not rebel. He takes advantage of being the captain and that the sailors fear him so he tries to persuade them.

5.  Moby-Dick is a symbol.   Research the following passages in the Bible that refer to Jonas and the whale and Leviathan.  Explain how Melville’s portrayal of Moby-Dick might be inspired by them.ç

im not familiar with the bible.. but i think a man can be powerful enough to convince himself and turn his mind about something like this obsession and  nothing in excess could ever be good.
